Lanthanide doped nanoheaters with reliable and absolute temperature feedback

The development of selective and controlled photo-thermal therapies requires luminescent nanoparticles capable simultaneous heating contactless thermal sensing. Until now, have suffered from a lack control over the absolute temperature treated tissue because nanothermometers used for feedback, based on spectral analysis emitted radiation, were affected by inhomogeneous extinction tissues. This work shows how this deficiency can be overcome using core-shell-shell nanostructures doped with lanthanide ions (Nd3+ Yb3+). Thermal reading was achieved Yb3+ luminescence lifetime whereas thanks to non-radiative deexcitations Nd3+ ions. Simple proof-of-concept experiments show great potential these lanthanide-doped in vivo treatments reliable feedback.
